چکیده

One important prerequisite for geodetic Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) is the use of frequency standards with excellent short term stability. This makes VLBI stations, which are often co-located with Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiving stations, interesting for studies of timeand frequency-transfer techniques. We present an assessment of VLBI time-transfer based on the data of the two week long consecutive IVS CONT08 VLBI campaign by using GPS Carrier Phase (GPSCP). CONT08 was a 15 day long campaign in August 2008 that involved eleven VLBI stations on five continents. For CONT08 we estimated the worst case VLBI frequency link stability between the stations of Onsala and Wettzell to ≈ 1e-15 at one day. Comparisons with GPSCP confirm the VLBI results. We also identify time-transfer related challenges of the VLBI technique as used today.

Combining GPS and VLBI for inter-continental frequency transfer

For decades the global positioning system (GPS) has been the only space geodetic technique routinely used for inter-continental frequency transfer applications. In the past very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) has also been considered for this purpose and the method’s capabilities were studied several times. However, compared to GPS current VLBI technology only provides few observations per...

The Integration of Collocated GPS, VLBI and SLR Results

In recent years space geodetic techniques such as the Global Positioning System (GPS), Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI), and Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) have been collocated to address many applications in geoscience. While results from all these techniques are contaminated by various biases and errors, a commonmode signal has been found among the collocated results of GPS, VLBI and S...

Evaluation of co-location ties relating the VLBI and GPS reference frames

We have compared the VLBI and GPS terrestrial reference frames, realized using 5 years of time-series observations of station positions and polar motion, with surveyed co-location tie vectors for 25 sites. The goal was to assess the overall quality of the ties and to determine whether a subset of co-location sites might be found with VLBI–GPS ties that are self-consistent within a few millimete...

A GPS-based method to model the plasma effects in VLBI observations

Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites broadcast at frequencies of 1,575.42 MHz (L1) and of 1,227.60 MHz (L2). The dispersive property of the ionosphere can be used to combine independent measurements at the two frequencies to estimate the total electron content (TEC) between a GPS receiver site and a broadcasting satellite. Such measurements, made at sites near to Very Long Baseline Interf...

Degree-1 Earth deformation from very long baseline interferometry measurements

[1] The presence of degree-1 deformations in very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) measurements is detected for the first time. We compare VLBI measurements with the deformation field predicted using a GPS-determined load moment. Degree-1 series in the center of figure frame have root mean square values up to 3 and 1.5 mm in the up and horizontal components respectively. The predicted baseli...
